What I learned teaching AI security to university students

Hey everyone hope your doing well! Today I am going to walkthrough with my recent collab with Themis Labs and Swinburne University teaching AI Security

The Prep

So, for me, I have a pretty good background in AI Security, especially in my independent security research project, Failed Training, which focuses on why models go wrong and how to fix them. So during this time, I studied more red team and blue team techniques to get a better understanding of how we can use AI for offensive and defensive security. I also built my own cyber range for students

Why the range?

I built the range to have something useful, not just for the students but for anyone who needs some labs to understand the concepts. This was very fun for me because as I practiced and understood the techniques, I was building something not just from a security/engineer perspective but from a student perspective so it made the look and feel of the labs feel approachable. This is something I will flesh out more in the future as we start to understand AI more.

Kahoot Kahoot Kahoot

So during my last lecture, they said I should try something more interactive next time, so I built a Kahoot for my lecture, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the students had, and they got competitive, and this actually opened up new ideas for the ISC2 Vietnam Chapter and me. But overall, I learned that this level of interactivity is great for students, and I was pleasantly happy!

So what I learned from all this

I really enjoy doing lectures and I absolutely love seeing students getting involved and engaged in the lecture, it was great to see so many minds observing and thinking about the possibilities of AI and I am so glad they enjoyed it. I learned more technical depth about AI as well and found a deeper passion for teaching, So this was absolutely worth it!

Thank you ISC2 Vietnam and Swinburne Vietnam for another great opportunity for lecturing! I can't wait to do more in the future!
